Hawa Mahal, known as the “Palace of Breeze,” is a summer palace located in the heart of Jaipur, India. Many see the Hawa Mahal from the street view and think it is the front of the palace, but it is actually the back! Built in 1799, the primary purpose behind the construction was to provide a place for the royal women of the Kachwaha Rajput dynasty, primarily the queens and their female attendants, to observe the daily life and festivities of the city without being seen by the public. The intricate lattice windows and screens allowed them to watch street processions, festivals, and daily activities in anonymity.

The palace is constructed of pink and red sandstone, a signature of Jaipur's architecture, and has a total of 953 small casements each with small lattice worked pink windows, balconies, and arched roofs with hanging cornices. This allows a breeze to blow through the mahal and keep it cool and airy in summer. Despite the large number of windows, each of them are size of a peep hole!
