MTips – M is for Mary, M is for Mayflower, M is for Mimi...
July, 2013

The other day I heard disparaging remarks from someone who lamented the fact that the airlines had gotten so bad that they were nothing more than ‘flying Greyhound busses.’ I found this remark insulting - insulting that is to Greyhound and other companies who provide that type of service.

Why so?

Boarding and disembarking a motorcoach is over in a matter of a very few minutes – try that on an airplane.
On a Greyhound you never get a middle seat – you either get an aisle seat or a window seat.
You never pay five dollars for a can of beer because they don’t sell beer on the coach.
You never have a tiring, expensive cab ride from the terminal to downtown, as Greyhound’s terminals are all in the heart of cities.
They never lose your luggage because you’re standing next to the coach when they load and unload your bags.
You can buy a ticket right at the time of departure, and not worry that you have overpaid. And you could change departure dates or give your ticket to a friend, without a severe ‘change of name’ penalty.
Clouds don’t block the scenery.

On another note, there are some folks who think motorcoaches on the highway take up too much space, and pollute the air. Well, 40 people in one motorcoach take up 40 feet of highway, whereas 40 people in cars (four to a car) take up 400 feet of highway. And that one coach, compared to ten cars, would only put 1/7th the particulates into the atmosphere.

See what I mean? As the late comedy star Rodney Dangerfield used to say, “I get no respect!” It really is time to give motorcoaches their fair respect.

Mayflower Tours operates deluxe escorted holidays. Our unique selling feature is that on every tour there is a professional Tour Manager who is a social director, concierge and business manager. Our mode of transportation varies. We travel by airplane, motorcoach, train and river vessel. Although we don’t use Greyhound (we hire only late model coaches that are expressly set up for touring) at Mayflower we choose traveling by motorcoach as it is a consistent and high quality product. The best surprise is no surprise.

Happy summer traveling,
