Planes, trains, motorcoaches...and now Segway tours!

Mayflower Tours operates escorted holidays. We sell escorted group travel. The mode of transportation is the vehicle that gets us from place to place. We travel by air, train, coach, river cruise vessel and more. So why not by Segway?

The other day, my brother and his wife came to Chicago and wanted to do something different - and they love Chicago, so they were ready for anything. I decided to show them Chicago by Segway. What was very important was to get a guide to go with us, so I created our first ever escorted tour via Segway.

Things to know
Weather needs to be dry and pleasant
Allow three hours
Organize a private tour for your group only
Select a reputable company centrally located by some of the key areas you want to see
Ask about their training on how to use the Segway. We had a half-hour training session consisting of a DVD and then we rode the Segway under supervision of our guide to get the feel of it. Learn how to stop!

Our guide provided by the company was a gem. Aaron rode ahead of us watching how we were doing, telling us about this curb and that crack. We rode on the sidewalks and crossed the streets with the pedestrians.

We would stop together and then our guide would tell us all about Millennium Park, Buckingham Fountain and the skyline of Chicago. Halfway through, we made a comfort stop by the Shedd Aquarium and Soldier Field (home of Da' Bears). My legs felt funny yet it was rewarding and invigorating to be on that Segway. Before you know it, the Segway was your buddy. By the way, three of us are over 65 years-young.

One question I always get asked is ....are the size of your groups getting smaller? Well yes and no. Yes, there were four of us on the Segway tour. Yes, there are 120 travelers on a river cruise. So are our groups getting smaller? The answer is that the size of the group may not matter, yet the escorted group experience must be TOPS.

Happy traveling,
