Built between 1958 and 1961 this 112,544-square-foot bunker was intended to secure US lawmakers from nuclear attack during the cold war era. 3 Cass Scenic Railroad and Corduroy Inn and Lodge
Travel through the rugged West Virginia mountains to the picturesque town of Cass which has remained unchanged since its founding in 1901. Here, board the Cass Scenic Railroad for a ride to Bald Knob, the third highest point in the state. Feel the rumble and hear the hiss of the restored steam locomotive as you travel up the mountain, through two switchbacks to view the open fields and Whitaker Station.
Enjoy a sack lunch as you climb the mountain. Then it’s off to the upscale boutique Corduroy Inn and Lodge in Snowshoe, West Virginia. This popular ski destination offers spectacular sunrise and sunset views from high atop the mountain. Tonight’s “Almost Heaven Sunset Dinner” features farm-to-table cuisine served in the terraced hall offering undisturbed sunset views.

4 Greenbrier Wilderness Train and Green Bank Radio Observatory
Today you ride the newest rail excursion in West Virginia, the Greenbrier Wilderness Train. This four-hour excursion heads into the wilderness of the Greenbrier River Valley. Framed by forested hills on both sides of the river, this remote region is home to Bald Eagles, osprey, black bear and coyotes. Enjoy your included lunch while traveling between Cass and Durbin. Then cross to the next valley filled with satellite dishes. This is the Green Bank Astronomy Observatory where you will tour the facility. Dinner is on your own at the lodge tonight to experience their dining venues. Meals: B, L
5 New Tygart Flyer and Gandy Dancer Dinner Theater
This morning climb aboard the New Tygart Flyer
for a wilderness excursion. With its vintage, diesel-powered locomotive and comfortable climate-controlled passenger coaches the Flyer climbs along the cascading Shavers Fork of the Cheat River to the High Falls, accessible only by train. There is also a unique “S” curve tunnel, a high bridge and miles of unspoiled mountain views. A box lunch is included on the train.
Tonight, enjoy a delicious dinner followed by the live entertainment of the Mountain Memories Show Band, serving up music from the 50s, Motown, Gospel, Patriotic along with family-friendly comedy and amazing dancers. Meals: B, Box lunch, D
6 & 7 Blennerhassett Hotel and Home
Work your way to the river town of Parkersburg for lunch at the historic Blennerhassett Hotel. Designed and built by Colonel William Nelson Chandler, the hotel opened its doors in 1889.
