Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Depart the USA

Depart the USA on your overnight flight to Lisbon, Portugal.

Day 2: Lisbon, Portugal

Welcome to Lisbon! Upon arrival, you’ll be met at the airport by a representative of Mayflower Cruises & Tours and transferred to the hotel. Flights should arrive by 3:30pm. The remainder of the day is at your leisure to begin discovering this capital city. This evening, join your Mayflower Tour Manager and fellow travelers for an included dinner. Meal: D

Day 3: Lisbon

An included orientation tour highlights the famous sites of the city. Admire panoramic views from Eduardo VII Park in the center of the city. Travel along the Tagus River and see ‘Monument to the Discoveries’ and make a photo stop at Belem Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and iconic symbol of the city. Continue to the Convento dos Cardaes for a visit to one of Lisbon’s best preserved historic convents. Discover the richly decorated interior, from the azulejo tile panels to gilded woodwork to the sacred art offering unique insight into the city’s religious and artistic heritage. The tour concludes at the hotel, leaving the afternoon free to shop, dine and experience this historic yet cosmopolitan city on your own. Meal: B

Day 4: Sintra / Cabo da Roca / Cascais

Today’s excursion showcases the beauty of areas surrounding Lisbon. Depart by coach for Sintra Natural Park, a magical region known for its lush vegetation and beautiful scenery. Visit Quinta da Regaleira, a UNESCO World Heritage estate known for its palace, mysterious gardens, hidden tunnels and ‘initiation well’. Learn about the symbolism, history and hidden meanings of the various sites as you stroll the grounds with the local guide. Continue to the picturesque town of Sintra for free time to meander through the winding alleyways lined with shops and restaurants. After time for lunch on your own, continue to Cabo da Roca – the westernmost point of continental Europe, and the place where the land ends and the sea begins. From the cliff top overlook, see the lighthouse guarding the rocky cliffs, and the Atlantic Ocean sprawling endlessly towards the horizon. The journey continues to Cascais, a charming coastal resort town. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the town with your guide and see why it’s famous for its beaches. After a day of touring, return to the hotel in Lisbon via a scenic drive along the rugged coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Meal: B

Day 5: Lisbon

Discovery of Lisbon continues with an exploration of the historic city center. The walking tour begins upon arrival at Praça do Comércio, former home of Ribeira Palace, residence of the King of Portugal, until destroyed by an earthquake. Located along the banks of the Tagus River, you are greeted with a beautiful view of the rebuilt plaza and the grand arch leading into the historic center. Admire the statue of King José I in the center and the elegant 18th-century buildings lining the edges. Stroll through the arch and along the lively pedestrian street Rua Augusta to Rossio Square, another of Lisbon’s iconic and vibrant squares. Here you’re in for a treat as you attend a workshop and make your own local specialty, Pastel de Nata. The pastry chef gives you a warm welcome and introduces the history of this tart. Under his guidance, mix the dough to create the flaky layers, prepare the custard filling and assemble your tart. Enjoy a cup of Portuguese coffee while they bake, then savor your tasty treat! Return to the hotel for the remainder of the day at leisure. Meal: B

Day 6: Lisbon - Óbidos – Nazaré - Porto

It’s time to depart Lisbon for Porto, the second largest city in Portugal. Explore the medieval walled town of Óbidos enroute. The guide leads you through its picturesque cobblestoned streets, lined with white-washed houses, colorful flowers and traditional shops. Continue to Sítio, a high vantage point overlooking Nazaré, Portugal’s most famous fishing village. Hear about the ‘big waves’ the area is known for (from November to February) due to the geographical location. Enjoy the spectacular view of the cliffs, beach, and colorful harbor below. Free time for lunch on your own at a local restaurant before continuing to Porto with an early evening arrival and dinner at the hotel. Meals: B, D

Day 7: Porto

Begin discovering this colorful riverside city with a brief walking tour. See the cathedral as well as the amazing azulejos tilework of the São Bento train station in the UNESCO World Heritage historic center. Over 22,000 hand-painted tiles were used to create impressive murals of historic events. The excursion continues with a visit to Sandeman wine cellar. During the guided visit, discover the heritage and intricate winemaking process of Port wine, a major product of the area. A sampling of Port wines concludes the experience before returning to the hotel with the rest of the day left free of planned activities. Meal: B

Day 8: Aveiro

Often referred to as the ‘Venice of Portugal’, the enchanting city of Aveiro is on today’s agenda. Upon arrival, depart on a guided walk through the colorful city, admiring the elegant Art Nouveau buildings, picturesque bridges and lively squares, all reflecting the city’s rich architectural and cultural heritage. You’ll soon understand why it got its nickname! Sit back and relax on a leisurely cruise through the picturesque canals aboard a classic ‘moliceiro’ boat. Enjoy free time for independent exploration and lunch on your own before returning to Porto. Don’t forget to stop in a pastry shop to try their local specialty, oves moles! This evening, a Fado show enhances your farewell dinner experience at a local venue. Witness the emotion of the performers as they sing songs telling tales of life, struggle and passion while you dine. Meals: B, D

Day 9: Douro Valley

Today’s adventure takes you through the scenic Douro Valley. Depart by coach for the village of Lamego, home to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies – one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Portugal. Visit the Sanctuary perched atop the hill, with its iconic 686-step granite staircase, beautifully decorated with the traditional blue and white azulejos tiles. Continue to Quinta da Pacheca Winery. See the vineyards, learn about the different grapes and types of wines created from them. Sample some of their vintages, enjoy an included lunch and attend a workshop on cork, another local product vital to their economy. Learn about the importance of this traditional craft in winemaking, and the variety of products it’s used for from pens and notebooks to shoes and purses. During the workshop, under the guidance of the resident artist, create your own souvenir as you depict an image related to wine culture on a small cork panel. Return to the hotel in Porto for the final evening. Meals: B, L

Day 10: Porto / USA

This morning, depart for the Porto airport for your flight home. The memories of the sites, scenery, samples of local specialties and local culture from your trip to Portugal are sure to be cherished for years to come. Meal: B
