Day 1: Depart the USA
Depart the USA on your overnight flight to Amman, Jordan.
Day 2: Amman, Jordan
Welcome to the Kingdom of Jordan. After arrival, you will be met by a representative of Mayflower Cruises and Tours and transferred to the hotel. Time at leisure to acquaint yourself with your new surroundings prior to this evening’s dinner. Meal: D
Day 3: Amman / Jerash / Ajloun Woodland Reserve
After breakfast, depart for Jerash to see the amazing ruins of Roman urbanism and the best-preserved Roman ruins outside of Italy. Greeted by Hadrian’s Arch, a monument from the 2nd century, walk with your guide among the colonnaded street of the Cardo that runs the entire length of the city. Marvel at the Corinthian columns of the Temple of Artemis, see the Forum surrounded by 160 columns, and visit the Hippodrome. All of this was buried after an earthquake devastated the area in 749 A.D. and was only discovered 200 years ago!
After free time for lunch on your own, journey to the Ajloun Forest Reserve Calligraphy House, established to bridge the gap between different cultures. A local woman greets you and explains the history of Arabic calligraphy and the main principles of the different styles. Select the font style you like best and create your own masterpiece as you write your name using the traditional dried reed instrument as a pen. Participation in this activity benefits the employment of women from the local community. Return to Amman for a rest before dinner at a local restaurant. Meals: B, D
Day 4: Amman – Mt. Nebo – Madaba – Petra
Begin the day with a visit to Mt. Nebo, a holy site from where Moses was said to have seen the forbidden ‘Promised Land’. See ancient Byzantine mosaics and the architectural remains of a 4th-century Experience a Bedouin sunset jeep tour in Wadi Rum Christian Basilica and enjoy beautiful views of the Holy Land from your vantage point at 2,330 ft. above sea level. Continue to Madaba to view the remaining preserved 6th-century mosaic map on the floor in St. Geroge’s Greek Orthodox Church. Having witnessed mosaic treasures, visit a school to learn how this ancient craft is done and make your own mosaic souvenir.
A culinary treat is in store as you head to the family-owned Hikayet Sitti restaurant for lunch. Situated in a restored 110-year-old house, the architecture is as appealing as the food. From the moment you arrive, warm smiles and genuine hospitality await. The traditional homemade meals highlight local Jordanian culture, heritage, and ingredients sourced from nearby farms and markets. After an amazing lunch experience, travel to Petra for the next two overnights. Meals: B, L, D
Day 5: Petra
After breakfast, it is time to explore the enchanting Red Rose city - a site considered to be the ‘eighth wonder of the ancient world’. Your guide leads you on a walk through the Siq – a narrow gorge carved by the forces of water erosion, complete with fossils embedded in the rock. Upon exiting the Siq, the awe-inspiring view of the Treasury awaits. It’s impossible to describe the feeling of standing at the foot of this amazing archeological masterpiece, whose carvings have survived for centuries. Continue exploring the sites of this dead city and architectural treasure as you see the Monastery, the Silk Tomb and the Roman Colonnade and Amphitheater, which could seat 7,000 people. The sheer size of the monuments throughout the site is breathtaking! Return to the hotel with free time for lunch on own and time to rest. This evening depart for a cooking class and dinner. Day 6: Petra – Wadi Rum
Before the next adventure, enjoy one more local experience in Petra: learn how to bake bread in private homes, using techniques passed down through the generations. An integral part of Jordanian life, no meal is considered complete without bread. You’ll be taken to a private home and meet your Chef who will demonstrate the techniques. Then it’s time to roll up your sleeves and try your hand at this traditional art. Afterwards, sit down with the Chef and learn how to use the bread as you share a meal of Galayah Bandoora, tearing the bread with your hands and scooping up the Galayah. Having experienced this local tradition and culinary treat, it’s time to say goodbye to your Chef and travel to the desert in Wadi Rum. This afternoon, depart on a Bedouin sunset jeep tour to enjoy the serenity of the desert and witness its landscapes. From dramatic sandstone mountains and natural arches to prehistoric inscriptions and carvings lining rocky caverns, this is sure to be an adventure to remember. Return to the camp for dinner and overnight. Meals: B, light lunch, D
Day 7: Wadi Rum – Kerak Castle - Amman
Leaving the tranquility of the desert behind, return to the bustling city of Amman, with a visit to the 12th-century medieval Kerak Castle en-route. As a former capital of the Biblical kingdom of Moab, al-Karak was an important city with a strategic location. Explore the castle, one of the few remaining Crusader castles, with its maze of corridors and tunnels. Spectacular views over the Promised Land can be seen from the top of its walls. Continue to Amman for check in at the hotel and dinner. Meals: B, D
Day 8: Amman
After breakfast, depart on a tour showcasing the highlights of this capital city from its ancient ruins to contemporary metropolis. The Citadel dominates one of the seven hills of Amman and contains excavated ruins from its heritage. See the Great Temple of Amman - remains of a Roman temple, a Byzantine church, and a colossal marble hand considered to be from a statue of Hercules once standing over 42 feet tall. Marvel at the size and acoustics of the city’s Roman Theater and visit the Jordan Museum. Home to the country’s most important archaeological finds, the Dead Sea Scrolls and 9,000-year- old ‘Ain Ghazal’ statues (the oldest human statues ever made) are housed here. Return to the hotel for an afternoon at leisure. Meals: B, D
Day 9: Dead Sea
After a morning at leisure, depart for the Dead Sea – the lowest point on the face of the Earth, at 1,368 feet below sea level. Its coast remains one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the world. Float in the ‘healing waters’ of this remarkable ‘natural health spa’ whose water contains 21 minerals - 12 of which are not found in any other body of water. An included lunch is provided before returning to Amman. Meals: B, L, D
Day 10: Amman – USA
After breakfast, it’s time to transfer to the Queen Alia Airport for your flight home. Memories of the rich culture and amazing archeological sites of the Kingdom of Jordan will be treasured for a lifetime. Meal: B
