New ETA Requirement for the United Kingdom
Starting January 8, 2025, U.S. passport holders will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter the United Kingdom. The ETA is part of a new policy aimed at streamlining travel and enhancing border security. Applications will open on November 27, 2024, and here’s what you need to know:
- Validity: The UK ETA will be valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. If you renew your passport, you will need to reapply for an ETA.

For travelers heading to France, the European Union is introducing the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) in 2025. While the official start date has not yet been announced, it’s expected to go into effect early in the year.
- Purpose: The ETIAS is designed to enhance border security within the Schengen Zone, which includes France.
- Application: Once the system is operational, travelers will need to complete their ETIAS application online. Updates and guidance will be available at ETIAS – European Union (europa.eu).
- Timing: It’s recommended to check for updates at least 45 days before your departure to ensure compliance.
Passport Requirements for Both Countries
Regardless of visa requirements, U.S. travelers must have a passport that remains valid for at least six months beyond the completion of their trip. For example, if you’re traveling in September 2025, your passport must be valid through March 2026. Non-U.S. passport holders should verify entry requirements with the embassies of the United Kingdom and France.
