2. Crater of Diamonds State Park – Murfreesboro, Arkansas
What is Mined: Diamonds, amethysts, garnets, jasper, quartz.
Visitor Experience:Where can diamonds be found? The answer might surprise you. Arkansas’s Crater of Diamonds State Park is one of the only diamond-producing sites in the world where the public can search for diamonds in their original volcanic source. The policy here is “finders, keepers,” meaning the diamonds you find are yours to keep.
A few facts about diamonds in Arkansas: The first diamond was found here in 1906 by John Huddleston, a farmer who owned a portion of the diamond-bearing crater at that time. The Crater of Diamonds has changed hands several times over the years and several companies made unsuccessful attempts at commercial diamond mining. Lawsuits, lack of profit, and fires are among the reasons suspected for these failures. From 1952 to 1972, this site was operated privately, as a tourist attraction. In 1972, the State of Arkansas purchased the Crater of Diamonds for development as a state park.

From this discovery, gold mining spread gradually to nearby counties and eventually into other southern states. During its peak years gold mining was second only to farming in the number of North Carolinians it employed. The estimated value of gold recovered reached over one million dollars a year. North Carolina led the nation in gold production until 1848, when it was eclipsed by the great rush to California.
4. Consolidated Gold Mine – Dahlonega, Georgia

Dahlonega, known for its gold rush history, also features a gold museum for deeper insights.Gold was first discovered in the Dahlonega area in 1828, twenty years before the Gold Rush to California. When it was discovered it was completely by accident – when a deer hunter, Benjamin Parks, tripped over a rock 2 ½ miles south of what is now Dahlonega. He got to looking at it and it was full of gold. Within one year’s time some 15,000 miners heard about that and rushed to find some gold for themselves. At that time there was so much gold in and around Dahlonega that it laid on top of the ground, washing off the mountainsides for centuries.

Since the early 1900s, the Virgin Valley Opal Mines have had a reputation for producing unique, world-class precious gemstones.

Since 1981, the Royal Peacock Opal Mines have been open to the public for fee digging. The hills have yielded countless world-class precious opal specimens during that time.
7. Heritage Gold Mine Park – McCormick, South Carolina
What is Mined: Gold and gemstones.

One of the most productive of the 19th century South Carolina gold mines was the Dorn Mine. William Dorn, an Edgefield County farmer who became obsessed with gold prospecting in the 1840’s, spent many years examining and testing sites in Edgefield and Abbeville counties. In 1850, Dorn became convinced that a rich vein was located on land owned by his neighbor, Dr. John Wardlaw Hearst. Hearst agreed to allow Dorn to look for gold on his land, and Dorn spent the next year prospecting in the area. In February of 1852 Dorn discovered the second richest vein of gold in South Carolina’s history. Only the Haile Mine in Lancaster County produced more gold than the Dorn Mine. The vein was located just below the surface.
8. Rainbow Ridge Opal Mine – Virgin Valley, Nevada
